Ka ‘Ohana O Honu’apo
works with a variety of community organizations, governmental agencies, private
businesses, and many individuals to do the following:
- Educate our local
children and their families about the historical, cultural, and environmental values
of Honu’apo Park, its estuary, wetlands, and shoreline;
- Create a long-term
general resources management plan to conserve and protect the entire park;
- Create a wetlands
restoration plan to restore, conserve, and protect a critical native bird, plant,
and wetlands habitat in the park;
- Inform the Ka’u community,
Hawai’i Island and state residents, and countless visitors about the importance
and values of Honu’apo Park;
- Establish a safe
and accessible community shoreline park for all its users and visitors;
- Coordinate park activities
and maintenance with the County of Hawaii’s Parks and Recreation Department and
the Department’s park staff;
- Maintain an active
volunteer base, office, and part-time staff.
Ka ‘Ohana has entered into a formal Memorandum of Understanding
with the County of Hawai’i regarding the restoration, maintenance, and protection
of Honu’apo Park. We also comply with all rules, restrictions, and policies
under the state’s Department of Land and Natural Resources and the National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Administration.
